You joined the employee referral campaign. You applied for your plan. Your SIM is working. But there is one more small step.

You must make one call of 10 seconds or more from the Rakuten Link app. Without this call, the referral points do not come.

This guide explains the call in very simple steps. It is written for international students and other people living in Japan.

Why the 10 second call matters

The employee referral campaign has three things you must finish. All three must be done by the deadline.

1. Apply for Rakuten SAIKYO Plan or Rakuten SAIKYO U-NEXT.
2. Start using the line (the plan usage start date).
3. Make a call of 10 seconds or more from Rakuten Link (Rakuten Mobile’s free calling app).

Applying alone is not enough. Many people forget the third step.

The deadline is 23:59 on the last day of the second month after your entry day. The entry is the referral login (logging in with your Rakuten ID from the referral link). For example, if you enter in September, the deadline is November 30.

So please make the call soon after your line starts. Do not wait until the last day.

Before you call: set up Rakuten Link

You need the app ready first. Here is the general flow.

1. Download the Rakuten Link app on your smartphone.
2. Open the app and log in with your Rakuten ID (your Rakuten Member ID).
3. Use the same Rakuten ID that you used for the referral login and the application.
4. Enter your Rakuten Mobile phone number when the app asks.
5. Allow the app to use your phone, contacts and notifications if it asks.

Your line must already be working. If you still see “no service”, finish your SIM or eSIM setup first.

If the setup screen does not work, check the Rakuten Mobile website or ask at a Rakuten Mobile shop. The website has English pages.

How to make the 10 second call

The call itself is easy. It takes less than a minute.

1. Open the Rakuten Link app. Do not open your phone’s normal calling app.
2. Tap the call (keypad) icon inside Rakuten Link.
3. Type the phone number you want to call.
4. Tap the call button inside the app.
5. When the other person answers, talk for more than 10 seconds.
6. End the call.

That is all. One call is enough.

Make the call a little longer

Ten seconds is very short. Timing can be hard to judge.

I suggest you talk for about 30 seconds or one minute. Then you do not need to worry about the exact length.

Who can you call?

You do not need a special number. These are fine:

• A family member or a friend in Japan.
• Your own other phone number, if you have two phones.
• A classmate or a housemate who can answer.

Ask the other person first. Tell them you only need to talk for a short time. Many students call a friend sitting next to them.

Calls that do NOT count

This part is important. Some calls look normal but are not counted for the campaign.

• Calls to numbers starting with 0570 (other carriers’ connection services).
• Calls to numbers with # (hash numbers).
• Calls where you add a prefix number in front of the phone number.
• Calls to special numbers such as 188.

Also, a call from your phone’s standard calling app does not count. The call must be made inside the Rakuten Link app.

Please do not call emergency numbers for a test. Call a person you know.

Quick check after the call

After the call, do a simple check yourself.

If any answer is “No”, make one more call. There is no cost problem, because calls through Rakuten Link are the app’s calling service.

How this connects to the referral points

The employee referral campaign gives points when you apply for Rakuten SAIKYO Plan or Rakuten SAIKYO U-NEXT after a referral login.

• 14,000 Rakuten Points per line with an MNP transfer (keeping your phone number when you switch).
• 13,000 Rakuten Points in other cases, for example a new phone number.

The points come in three parts. For MNP: 5,000 → 5,000 → 4,000. For other cases: 5,000 → 4,000 → 4,000.

Points start 4 months after the month of your entry, over 3 months. They are Rakuten Points (time-limited points). They are valid for 6 months, including the day you get them. Please use them before they end.

The order matters: enter first

One more reminder. The referral login must come before your application. That is the basic rule.

An entry within 7 days including your application day may still be accepted. But you may be asked to confirm things. So entering first is safer.

Other points to remember:

• The entry is free. It does not sign you up for any plan.
• Use the same Rakuten ID for the entry and the application. A different ID is not counted.
• Up to 5 lines per person are covered.
• Returning customers and shop applications are covered too.

The campaign may change or end without notice. Please check the latest conditions after you finish your entry.
